The UCA Blue Carbon Laboratory was launched by researchers and academics of the University of Cadiz,. We have been researching on the biology and ecology of two blue carbon ecosystems (seagrass meadows and saltmarshes) for more than two decades. Our experience goes beyond basic science, in which we have led numerous research projects at the national and international level in blue carbon ecosystems. In particular, we have participated in the development and implementation of the pioneering “Standard for certification of blue carbon credits of the Government of Andalusia (Spain)”, and also in the first pilot projects of blue carbon absorption in Andalusia: the restoration of the saltmarsh “Northern bank of the Guadalete River” in the Bay of Cadiz and the design of the conservation of Posidonia oceanica meadows in Agua Amarga (Almeria, Spain). The outcome of all these years of research supports our experience and excellence: more than 250 research articles published in international journals, 60 research projects in which we have participated, 20 books or book chapters and several national or international awards.
